Identification of Dysfunctional Cooperative Learning Teams Using Taguchi Quality Indexes
نویسنده
چکیده
In this study, dysfunctional cooperative learning teams are identified by comparing the Taguchi “larger-thebetter” quality index for the academic achievement of students in a cooperative learning condition with that of students in an individualistic learning condition. In performing the experiments, 42 sophomore mechanical engineering students are randomly assigned to the two learning conditions and are formed into mixed-ability three-member groups. The probability of erroneously identifying a functional team as dysfunctional is quantified using a control chart. The identification results are verified by examining the smaller-the-better and larger-thebetter Taguchi quality indexes for the students’ off-task behavior frequency and attitudes toward cooperative learning, respectively. The methodology and findings presented in this study provide a useful basis for the development of technology-assisted solutions for monitoring and analyzing the performance of cooperative learning teams.

Accounting for Individual Effort in Cooperative Learning Teams
An “autorating” (peer rating) system designed to account for individual performance in team projects was used in two sophomore-level chemical engineering courses in which the students did their homework in cooperative learning teams. Team members confidentially rated how well they and each of their teammates fulfilled their responsibilities, the ratings were converted to individual weighting fa...

متن کاملDistributed Beamforming Using Multi-Antenna Backscattering Network
This paper proposes two novel beam-forming methodologies, which employ passive RF devices to enhance received signal through a passive, scattering based beam forming. Currently available backscattering systems, e.g. the radio frequency identification (RFID), suffer from a poor communication in an environment with multiple passive devices. The intermediate antennas create severe scattering envir...
متن کاملCooperative learning and peer evaluation: The effect of free riders on team performance and the relationship between course performance and peer evaluation
Cooperative learning has gained popularity in higher educational settings. However, assigning grades equitably to all team members in a way that rewards them for their contributions remains challenging. In this paper, we ask whether having free riders on a team lowers the quality of submitted work, and whether students’ course performance correlates with peer evaluations. In an introductory soc...
